Confirmation - April 20, 2008

The six-member Confirmation Class of 2008 was confirmed on April 20 at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral in Newark, by the Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith, Bishop of Newark. On the first Sunday of Black History Month, Princeton University professor Dr. Albert Raboteau, one of the foremost authorities on African-American religion, preached at the 10:30 a.m. service and led a post-service discussion. This was just one of many Black History Month events hosted by St. George's Absalom Jones Committee on Black History & Culture.

Tom Murphy's Priesthood Ordination -

The Rev. Tom Murphy served as seminarian intern at St. George's for two months in the spring of 2007 and was ordained a deacon along with Chris Carroll. The Rev. Bernie Poppe was one of his vestors at his priesthood ordination, held at Grace Church in Madison where Tom now serves as Curate.

Susan Mangasarian's 2^nd CROP Walk Challenge -

Susan Mangasarian, at 83 a beloved matriarch of St. George's, walked for the second year in a row in the CROP Walk and challenged the St. George's community to sponsor her, with the Outreach Committee matching the pledges. Under Susan's leadership, the St. George's delegation raised $1110 dollars; the Outreach Committee matching brought St. George's total contribution to the Crop Walk up to $2110 - our largest ever! The total amount raised by all five participating churches was $4250.

The Bishop blessed the new Parish Hall and also the new outdoor altar in the Memorial Garden. He is shown with the Rev. The Rev. Gilbert Caldwell (second from left), a retired Methodist minister and Civil Rights Movement veteran who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., joined us to discuss issues of LGBTI inclusion in the church and society. His appearance as guest preacher and Adult Forum leader was co-sponsored by the Absalom Jones Committee for Black History and Culture and the Amicus/Amica LGBTI Fellowship Group, two of the Social Justice groups at St. George's. As we did last year, a real pony came to help in the re-enactment of Palm Sunday at the Family Eucharist in the Memorial Garden. This year, when rain interrupted the service, we moved it into the church, pony and all.

Marriage Equality Weekend - February 17 & 18, 2007

On the weekend before New Jersey's same-sex "civil union" law took effect, St. George's hosted "Marriage Equality Weekend" as a reminder of the ultimate goal of gay New Jersey citizens (and of the straight people who cherish and support them). A concert, Love & Marriage Jazz, featuring church choir member Elaine St. George and her band, was held on Saturday night, February 17. On Sunday, February 18, Harry Knox, director of the Religion & Faith Program of the Washington D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign, spoke at a forum titled "Faith & Fairness: Finding Tools for Advocacy in Your Faith Tradition."

The Bishop of Panama - January 28, 2007

The Rt. Rev. Julio Murray (right), Bishop of Panama, with the Rev. Bernie Poppe and Martha Gardner. The Diocese of Panama is the companion diocese to the Diocese of Newark; Bishop Murray was here for the Consecration of the 10th Bishop of Newark and came to St. George's the following day to be guest celebrant and preacher.

The Rev. Bernie Poppe, Rector of St. George's, was chair of the Consecration Committee for the Consecration of Mark Beckwith as 10th Bishop of Newark. The service was held in NJPAC with The Most Reverend Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, as celebrant and preacher. Numerous St. Georgians took part in the service including Michael Francaviglia, Diocesan Adminstrator and Secretary of Convention; Diane Sammons, Chancellor; and Martha Gardner, Diocesan Jubilee Officer and ERD Diocesan Coordinator.

Christmas Pageant - December 24, 2005

The people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in the land of deep darkness - on them a light has shone. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:2,6)

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (Luke 2:1-7)

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" (Luke 2:8-14)

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. (Luke 2:15-20)
